Rockets’ James Harden joins Warriors’ Stephen Curry as only players with 300 3-pointers in one season

James Harden, Stephen Curry

Houston Rockets point/shooting guard James Harden entered rarefied air during Sunday’s win over the Dallas Mavericks, knocking down his 300th three-point bucket of the season, putting his name alongside Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry in the record books. In what has already been a historic offensive season for Harden, he further added to its prowess by joining Curry as just the second player in history to amass 300 made threes in a single campaign.

Detractors will point out that Harden entered play Sunday having attempted 13.4 threes per contest, a surefire way to rack up threes in droves. But there’s been little doubting the historic offensive run Harden has had, averaging nearly five made triples per contest. He still has 16 more regular-season games on his schedule to see if he can reach the 400-make plateau. (It’s worth noting that through play Sunday, Curry sits at 281 makes this year, making him likely to join Harden in the 300 club by season’s end.)

Harden’s three-point shooting onslaught has helped vault him to the top of the league’s leaderboard in scoring, sitting at 36.3 points per game through play Sunday, nearly an eight-point cushion on Oklahoma City’s Paul George, who sits in second place. It would mark the second straight scoring crown for Harden, who has somehow continued to increase his scoring average over each of the last five seasons.

The Rockets as a team are averaging a league-high 45 three-point attempts per night, what one might call the Harden Effect. But the team appears to be hitting their stride right before the start of the postseason, currently locked in as the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference with Harden paving the way.
