Rockets HC Mike D’Antoni irate league office wasn’t open to process Carmelo Anthony trade
If you can believe it, veteran NBA forward Carmelo Anthony is on the move once again. This time, Anthony will be traded from the Houston Rockets to the Chicago Bulls — eventually anyway.
The Monday agreement between the Rockets and Bulls remains just out of the category of finalized, however, as the NBA league office remains closed in observance of Martin Luther King Day. As a result, Rockets head coach Mike D’Antoni is less than pleased because the surging Western Conference franchise was forced to make an additional transaction in order to add former Denver Nuggets and Brooklyn Nets big man Kenneth Faried to the fold.
With the Rockets looking to smoothly swap roster spots between Anthony and Faried, that possibility went by the wayside due to the absence of the league’s higher-ups. Instead, the Rockets were required to waive another player, forward James Nunnally, who was on a 10-day contract with the team.
The aforementioned D’Antoni had the following to say regarding the matter:
Mike D’Antoni is frustrated about how Houston’s roster crunch because the league office wasn’t open today to process the Carmelo Anthony trade cost James Nunnally his roster spot. “It’s not right,” D’Antoni said.

Leading to the Rockets’ need for Faried — no rhyme intended (well, maybe a little) — the team’s starting center, Clint Capela, was recently lost for the four-to-six weeks after undergoing thumb surgery. In Anthony’s case, the seasoned sharpshooter has not suited up for the Rockets in months as the franchise continued to look for a team that would allow them to unload ‘Melo in order for the former All-Star to return to the court.
While the Bulls have agreed to acquire Anthony, it is now being reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN that Chicago will immediately waive the former Denver Nuggets and New York Knicks standout, paving the way for him to become a free agent.
