Rockets HC Mike D’Antoni coughed, makes Melo ‘sick’ reference

Mike D’Antoni and the Houston Rockets have not been very straightforward with regard to what exactly is their deal with Carmelo Anthony. Although the team has already said before that an illness is what’s causing Anthony to miss games — he has missed each of Houston’s last three games — it’s been widely speculated that the Rockets have already made a decision to release the 10-time All-Star forward, and that blaming an unspecified ailment for his string of absences is just a way for them to spare the veteran swingman some embarrassment.

In any case, Tim MacMahon of ESPN tried to pretend as though he bit on the Rockets’ illness alibi to get a more accurate temperature of the Rockets’ standing with Carmelo Anthony, though, Mike D’Antoni easily got ahold of what he was up to.

It’s sad to see Carmelo Anthony become an unwanted piece of an NBA team. Just a few years ago, he was still among the most lethal offensive weapons in the game. Given the right situation, he remains capable of dealing serious blows to opposing defenses, but the right situation is also one that has become harder to come by for the former Syracuse Orangemen star.

There should be other teams interested in taking Anthony presumably once he gets cut, but aspiring for the same role he used to enjoy during the height of his career is something that’s only going to hurt his chances of getting signed.
