Rockets had ‘zero interest’ in DeMarcus Cousins, considered him a bad fit

DeMarcus Cousins, Rockets

The Golden State Warriors have made a big splash move earlier this week with the addition of All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins to a one-year deal at the mid-level exception worth $5.3 million.

Following the move, Cousins revealed that there were no serious offers from any teams that led to him to go this route by contacting the Warriors himself to get a deal worked out. According to Sam Amick of USA TODAY Sports, the Houston Rockets reportedly had no interest in bringing aboard the 27-year-old.

The Rockets could have been a potential landing spot for Cousins had they had serious interest, but the team was set with their current group of players around their All-Star backcourt of James Harden and Chris Paul. Houston under head coach Mike D’Antoni has embraced the approach of operating their offense behind emphasizing the 3-point shot.

Cousins would change up that game plan as he has proven to be most effective on the low block as he has operated to a greater degree with the ball in his hands creating his own shot. That is something that would take away from what the Rockets being able to center their offense on getting the open look rather than pound the ball in the paint, which is a method that D’Antoni has never truly been fond of throughout his NBA coaching career.

Meanwhile, the Achilles injury only further compounds things as there is no set timetable for when he will be able to return as it’s typically an ailment that takes around a year to fully heal. It is no slight to Cousins, who is one of the league’s most talented big men, but there much uncertainty about what type of player he will be once he does make it back to the court next season. This mind frame from other teams around the NBA ultimately led to the scenario of joining the Warriors becoming a realistic option.
