As the Houston Rockets get set to begin the 2018-19 NBA season, high expectations are surrounding them. After nearly knocking off the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Finals last season, Houston is hoping to take the next step and get back to that point this year.
Eric Gordon may not be viewed as one of the stars in Houston, but without him, the team would not have had as much success. His ability to score off the bench and shoot fit perfectly into Mike D’Antoni’s offensive system.
According to a report from Chron.com, Gordon is unlikely to extend his current contract with the Rockets. He will be a free agent following the 2019-20 season. Gordon opened up about the dialogue that he had with the Rockets about a new deal.
“There was extension talks, but nothing really serious. I would much rather be here as long as I can. Everything will work out. I’ll be here another two years. We’ll see what happens. I’ll see how the next two years go, but I would definitely like to be here the rest of my career.”
Even though he may not extend his current deal, it certainly sounds like he is more than welcome to the idea of playing in Houston long-term.
Last season with the Rockets, Gordon ended up averaging 18.0 points per game to go along with 2.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists. He shot 42.8 percent from the field overall and knocked down 35.9 percent from the 3-point line.
At 29 years old, Gordon is in the prime of his career. He has been able to stay mostly healthy over the last two seasons with the Rockets, which is exactly what his problem was early on in his career.
Expect to see Gordon have another successful season with the Rockets in 2018-19 and don’t be surprised if he’s a big part of their organization past his current contract.
