Rockets GM Daryl Morey optimistic about buyout market despite silent trade deadline

The Houston Rockets were one of the most aggressive teams this offseason, flipping nearly half of their roster in hopes to land Chris Paul, and later making signings to surround him with the right talent. But this aggressive mindset didn’t translate onto the trade deadline, as the Rockets remained silent through it while teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Detroit Pistons, and even the Phoenix Suns made some noise right before the clock expired.

Morey noted his team’s quietness through the movement during the last few days is rather a sign of the strength in their roster composition.

“That was our primary, if not only, objective,” Morey said, according to Jonathan Feigen of The Houston Chronicle. “Given the very small pool of players that teams would be willing to give up that we feel could improve our team, you’re already down to a handful of players. It’s a very small universe. As I said, it was going to be very unlikely we would do something this year.”

Morey is shifting his attention to the buyout market, as some front offices have been inclined to do, allowing Houston to nab complementary pieces without risking the trade of assets of draft picks in the process.

“We’re feeling good about potential buyout players,” Morey said. “Obviously, we’ll see how that materializes over the next few days, but we think there are players who could be available that could help us. We’d be looking for depth. It would be hard to get someone who would play.”

“It would be hard for us to get someone as good as Gerald (Green). He’s playing extremely well. But there are some solid players, veteran guys who have helped veteran teams in the past, who could be available. We’re optimistic about one buyout if not more that maybe would work.”

The Rockets are only one game away from the best record in the NBA, having won nine out of their last 10 games.
