Rockets’ GM Daryl Morey confirms playoff formats are being seriously looked at

For NBA fans, change may be coming to the current playoff format sooner than we realize. Bill Simmons of The Ringer, tweeted out on Sunday that one of his dream scenarios for the playoffs is inching closer to happening. Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey then responded directly to Simmons with some encouraging news.

“It’s been 11 years but we are finally inching closer to my dream of the Entertaining As Hell Tournament – after reg. season ends, 14 playoff seeds are locked, then we have a 16-team single elimination tournament for the last 2 seeds,” Simmons said.

Simmons elaborated more on how his format would work, tweeting out what would be the current playoff matchups if the season ended today.

Morey, who is quite vocal with the press and on social media, responded to Simmons by saying that he and NBA commissioner Adam Silver continue to discuss this type of change to the current playoff system.

“I can report that these types of concepts are being actively worked on. One thing I love about the NBA & Adam Silver is the constant efforts to make the game better. It is another reason the sports with older fan bases or worse leadership are in trouble going forward,” Morey said in response to Simmons.

However, Morey tweeted that there would be a minor difference between his preferred method and the one that Simmons wants.

This is actually a very intriguing idea, to say the least. Sometimes change is a good thing, and sometimes it’s best to not fix what isn’t already broken.
