Rockets GM Daryl Morey claims to ‘still have something up his sleeve’ this summer

The Houston Rockets are the favorite to land Carmelo Anthony. That may look like the last big move the Rockets make during the offseason. But Rockets general manager Daryl Morey isn’t ruling anything out yet.

According to Alysha Tsuji of For The Win, when asked if the Rockets were closing in on Anthony, Morey stated that they were “in the mix.” When asked if they had anything else “up their sleeve,” Morey replied “yes.” This is a clear sign that the organization may have a surprise or two in store.

Anthony is a no-brainer for the Rockets. He can replace the offensive production lost after the departure of Trevor Ariza and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute. Melo may not be able to match the defensive presence of Ariza or Mbah a Moute, but it’s hard to question his offensive talent.

In terms of what else Morey may have “up his sleeve,” there are still a few interesting free agents left on the market. Clint Capela remains unsigned. He was a huge part of the team’s success in 2017-18. It’s expected that he’ll re-sign, but nothing is done yet.

Rodney Hood and Jamal Crawford are two interesting free agents still available. Both are threats on the perimeter to knock down open shots. Hood shot 38 percent from behind the arc last season. Crawford is a three-time Sixth Man of the Year with ample experience coming off the bench.

It’s unclear exactly what Morey means when he says that he may have something “up his sleeve” but it’s clear that the Rockets are still exploring the free agent market for possible upgrades.
