Rockets expected to claim two-way player Jawun Evans after Suns waive him

Jawun Evans, Suns, Rockets

The Houston Rockets are planning to acquire guard Jawun Evans off waivers once his release from the Phoenix Suns becomes official, per Michael Scotto of The Athletic.

Jawun Evans, 22, played just seven games for the Suns and averaged only 9.1 minutes of playing time. He put up less than a point per game along with 1.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists. He signed a two-way contract with the Suns on Dec. 7, appearing in 32 games with the Suns’ NBA G League affiliate — the Northern Arizona Suns — while averaging 15.1 points and 5.8 assists.

The Rockets’ intrigue in Evans is partially due to their current sense of vulnerability with their point guard rotation. Austin Rivers is the surefire backup behind Chris Paul, but there is still room for insurance.

That’s where Evans comes in.

Standing at 6-foot-0, 185, the Oklahoma State product coincidentally drew Paul-like comparisons prior to being drafted with the No. 39 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Evans was dealt to the Los Angeles Clippers a few weeks later that summer where he spent his rookie season — averaging 4.8 points, 2.1 assists, and 1.8 rebounds in the best season thus far in his two-year career.

The Rockets are the furthest thing from a dormant franchise, and they continue to corroborate that by their quick-witted nature this year.

Given that the Rockets are on the hindquarters for waiver claims due to their 46-27 record, it is still unclear whether or not another team will step in to pick up the young guard.
