Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni on recent win streak: ‘The guys just had enough of losing’

The Houston Rockets recently stringed a couple of key wins together, first taking down the Portland Trail Blazers and most recently the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night, starting out a quick win streak after dropping three straight and seven of their last nine games prior. Rockets head coach Mike D’Antoni sensed a change, a trend that has repeated in this team after losing skids have put them in a chokehold:

“The biggest thing is the guys just had enough of losing,” said D’Antoni, according to Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle. “When we were down… 15 points against Portland, you know a little bit like in Brooklyn, ‘enough is enough.’ And we have great veterans that know how to play, and we just are now finding the right psychological energy, whatever you want to call it, but it’s better.”

The Rockets needed a bombastic 50-point triple-double effort from James Harden to take down an up-and-coming Lakers team under LeBron James, though D’Antoni insists the collective attitude was what has helped the team turn the corner:

“Winning’s hard in this league, and you have to play hard, and we didn’t. We were too uneven before. It’s better now, but again we’ve been here before. You know, we’re trying to get out of the cellar. Let’s keep it in perspective.”

D’Antoni could be right here, as the Rockets were unable to muster a win against the Washington Wizards last month despite a season-high 54-point effort from Harden. Maybe this time, the collective spirits will be there for good, as Houston hopes to slowly climb out of the depths of the Western Conference and position itself in playoff contention.
