Rockets’ Christian Wood’s injury status, revealed

Rockets, Christian Wood

The extent of Christian Wood’s right ankle sprain remains uncertain but the Houston Rockets medical staff will evaluate him weekly, as confirmed by the team on Friday.

The 25-year-old  re-injured that already compromised right ankle on Thursday in the Rockets’ 115-103 win over the Memphis Grizzlies at FedEx Forum. Wood was trying to finish strong on a fastbreak when he accidentally stepped on the foot of Grizzlies guard Ja Morant in the third period.

He immediately grimaced in pain and stayed on the floor for some time. Wood valiantly tried to take his free throws after the hit but was persuaded by his teammates to go back to the locker room. He left the playing court in a wheelchair, much to the worry of Rockets fans.

Even the Rockets brass expressed post-game their concerns that Wood’s injury might be worse than it seems.

The 6-foot-10 big man, after all, already missed three games earlier this season due to the same injury. It will be wise for Houston to be extremely careful with Wood’s recovery this time around, in a bid not to further aggravate an already bothersome ankle.

Wood has been a breakout star for H-Town since they gave him a three-year, $41 million deal in the offseason. He has repaid their trust and more, notching career-highs of 22.0 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks, all the while knocking down 55.8 percent of his field goals and 42.1 of his triples in 17 games played.

The undrafted stud was a huge factor in the Rockets’ resurgence since the James Harden trade went down. He even had 17 points and seven boards against Memphis before the injury.
