Chris Paul was drafted fourth overall by the New Orleans Hornets (now Pelicans) back in 2005. However, the current Houston Rockets guard thought that he would go higher and join the Atlanta Hawks.
In a recent interview with Jonathan Feigen of The Houston Chronicle, the veteran playmaker admitted that he thought he was headed to the Hawks back in 2005 and said he was given the impression that the team will select him. Instead, Atlanta went with forward Marvin Williams, behind only the Milwaukee Bucks’ selection of Andrew Bogut.
“I got up at the draft,” Paul said of when the second pick was about to be announced,. “They pretty much told me they were picking me. I found a house [in Gwinnett County] and everything.”
Nonetheless, Chris Paul has still etched out a legendary NBA career while most certainly surpassing the legacies of both the aforementioned Williams and Bogut — as an individual player, anyway. It is also worth noting that the Utah Jazz selected point guard Deron Williams at No. 3 overall in 2005, just before Paul came off the board to the Hornets.
Now a member of the Rockets alongside fellow superstar guard James Harden, Paul is still attempting to win his first NBA title, which could come into fruition by the end of the 2018-19 season.
