Rockets became the fastest team to hit 1,000 threes in a season
The following statistic for this year’s red-hot Houston Rockets team will be the most underwhelming you have ever read. After their 108-105 loss to the Toronto Raptors on Friday night — ending their streak — the Rockets became the fastest team to 1,000 3-pointers in one season. It took them 65 games.
And, the Rockets were also the first team to make 1,000 3-pointers this season. These are all according to the NBA’s official Instagram account.
As a team, the Rockets made nine 3-pointers against the Raptors. That is actually less than they normally make per game on the year. But nonetheless, they were able to reach the milestone and make history.
But this is not surprising at all. Practically the entire Rockets roster has the elite capability of shooting 3-pointers at a very high level and does so more often than not.
This feat is also a testament to the system the Rockets play. They play under Mike D’Antoni, who values 3-pointers and layups more than any other shot in basketball. The Rockets shoot so many that any time a two-point shot goes it, it’s almost as if you can’t believe what you’re seeing.
One of the things that make the Rockets so good at 3-point shooting is where the players take shots from. They shoot several feet away from the line at times, effectively expanding the entire area that the defenses have to guard. And because the Rockets have so many great shooters, defenses have to close out that far.
The addition of Chris Paul has made the Rockets even tougher to guard. With both Paul and Harden’s ability to break down the defense and get into the paint, many of the Rockets’ 3-point looks are wide open, which in turn makes those shot easier to convert.
Long story short, the Rockets are good at 3-pointers and, of course, they broke the NBA record for the fastest team to make 1,000 in a season. It is a bit surprising, however, that it was not the Golden State Warriors who did this feat.
