Rockets asking price for Victor Oladipo trade, revealed

Rockets, Victor Oladipo

One of the players most frequently talked about in trade talks is Houston Rockets guard Victor Oladipo. Trade rumors intensified when he declined a max-contract extension from Houston. The team reportedly stated what they are looking for in exchange for Oladipo, per Shams Charania of The Athletic.

“The Rockets’ asking price for Victor Oladipo in an individual deal is believed to be a quality first-round pick or a good young player, although teams around the league wonder about whether Houston settles for second-round compensation, sources said. Miami, New York and Detroit have been among the teams to show interest in the two-time All-Star, per sources.”

What constitutes a good first-round pick or promising, young talent will differ from organization to organization, but both are considerable assets for a player, who is on the last year of his contract. At 28-years of age, Oladipo has many more years of high-level basketball remaining, and it makes sense for the Rockets to get something in return.

The biggest drawback to signing him has been his injury history. The second-overall pick from the 2013 draft has bounced around the league but had his breakout seasons in 2017-2018 and 2018-2019. He was named to the All-Star team in both instances.  Unfortunately, in 2019, he sustained a serious injury in his knee and has not been the same since.

When fully healthy and in the right team situation, he can change the landscape of the league. He can effortlessly slash to the hoop, using his size and athleticism. While not his calling card, he can it outside shots. An engaged Oladipo is one of the best perimeter defenders around. However, his days with the Rockets are drawing to a close.
