There’s no urgent sense of desperation for the Houston Rockets to sign the likes of JR Smith or Jamal Crawford, according to Kelly Iko of The Athletic.
Rockets guard Eric Gordon and Danuel House are out with injuries, leaving Houston thin at the guard position.
However, it appears the Rockets will rely on Ben McLemore until Gordon and House return rather than sign Smith or Crawford:
Concerning the injuries to Houston’s snipers, Rockets fans have pointed to the free-agent pool of shooters like J.R. Smith, Jamal Crawford, and Nick Young — names I brought up in conversation — but there’s no urgent sense of desperation to go that route. Internally, they believe the contributions of Ben McLemore and even calling up players like Gary Clark can hold them above water while Eric Gordon and Danuel House return to the fold.
After losing to the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday, the Rockets dropped to 11-5 on the season.
Crawford played with the Phoenix Suns last season. The veteran scorer averaged 7.9 points, 1.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 64 games while shooting 39.7 percent from the field, 33.2 percent from beyond the arc and 84.5 percent from the free-throw line.
Smith played in 11 games with the Cleveland Cavaliers last season before the franchise exiled him. Cleveland waived JR in the offseason. Smith averaged 6.7 points per game with the Cavs.
