Report: Tyronn Lue could be candidate for Rockets coaching job

Tyronn Lue, Clippers, Rockets

Tyronn Lue could reportedly be a candidate for the Houston Rockets head coaching job if Mike D’Antoni isn’t retained, per Joe Vardon of The Athletic.

D’Antoni’s contract with the Rockets expires at the end of the 2020 playoffs. Lue, who is currently an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Clippers, is expected to be a hot commodity this offseason.

Per Vardon:

Sources say a fourth destination that currently does not have a vacancy — Houston, where James Harden and Russell Westbrook star, and Mike D’Antoni is still the coach — could become a destination for Lue if the Rockets move on from D’Antoni.

The Rockets are currently in a first-round battle with the Oklahoma City Thunder. If Houston blows a 2-0 lead to the Thunder and loses, the chances of Mike D’Antoni not coming back would increase.

Tyronn Lue went 128-83 in the regular season during his stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He won 41 games in the playoffs as well and guided the Cavs to the 2016 championship over the Golden State Warriors.

The Rockets have yet to advance to the NBA Finals in the James Harden era, which began in 2012.

D’Antoni is one of the best offensive-minded coaches we have in the game. His style fits perfectly with the way Harden and Russell Westbrook want to play.

However, if Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta and general manager Daryl Morey want to move on from the former Coach of the Year, Lue could be a guy they take a look at.
