Report: Some around NBA believe Jeff Bzdelik is Rockets’ biggest loss this offseason

There has never been a shortage of offensive prowess on Mike D’Antoni’s Houston Rockets. However, many believe what took their game to the next level last season was their improved defensive mentality.

This is exactly why the recent departure of associate head coach Jeff Bzdelik, who is credited in having played a key role in the team’s defensive transformation, left a lot of Rockets supporters scratching their heads. So much so, that there are some who believe Bzdelik’s unexpected exit will turn out to be the team’s biggest loss of the summer.

“It’s a shocking development, even more so given the timing,” wrote Kelly Iko of The Athletic. “And it just doesn’t make much sense. Media Day is Monday, and training camp starts Tuesday at Lake Charles. Multiple league sources told The Athletic that they believe it is the biggest loss for Houston in the offseason, and are suspicious as to what led to such a turn of events.”

Bzdelik’s sudden retirement follows the departure of Trevor Ariza via free agency. The 33-year-old veteran, who signed a more lucrative deal with the Phoenix Suns over the summer, was arguably the Rockets’ most important defensive player.

The team’s official statement said that Bzdelik retired in order to spend more time with his family. However, it is understandable to wonder what else may have been going on behind the scenes.
