Report: Rockets were Russell Westbrook’s preferred trade destination due to James Harden

Russell Westbrook, James Harden

The Houston Rockets made a blockbuster trade for Oklahoma City Thunder star Russell Westbrook, and it appears James Harden was the main factor in the deal.

While the trade speculation had ramped up after the Thunder traded Paul George to the Los Angeles Clippers, no one really knew what Westbrook’s preferred destination was.

Well, it appears that the Rockets were indeed his top choice due to the Harden connection.

And with that known, Thunder GM Sam Presti worked diligently with Westbrook’s agent to complete the deal, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Westbrook joining Harden in Houston obviously once again changes the landscape of the Western Conference in the NBA.

With George joining up with Kawhi Leonard, Anthony Davis being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers to team up with LeBron James, and D’Angelo Russell adding to the excellent backcourt with the Golden State Warriors, the conference should feature plenty of awesome action next season.

And given the familiarity between Westbrook and Harden, they should have no trouble building chemistry right away once they take the court.

While the Rockets came up short in the playoffs this past season, having two scorers like these two should give Mike D’Antoni’s team another chance to compete for an NBA title.
