REPORT: Rockets waive Gary Clark

Gary Clark, Rockets, Russell Westbrook, James Harden

The Houston Rockets are moving on from Gary Clark, at least for now.

Houston waived the second-year forward on Tuesday, per Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle. The move gives the Rockets some roster flexibility with less than a month to go before the NBA trade deadline, while also leaving open the possibility that they could re-sign Clark should he still be available.

Gary Clark saw sporadic playing time for Houston this season, averaging just 11.8 minutes across the 18 contests that he appeared in. He shot 39 percent from the field overall, with 51 of his 59 shot attempts having come from behind the 3-point line en route to averaging just 3.9 points per contest. He filled a similar role for the organization last season, appearing in 51 games and similarly averaging just 2.9 points on a nightly basis.

The Rockets enter Tuesday leading the league in points per game with 119.4, which has propelled them to a 24-11 record and currently the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. The organization made a major overhaul during the offseason, acquiring former MVP Russell Westbrook from the Oklahoma City Thunder and pairing him with the epic scoring stylings of James Harden.

Players like Clark have been brought in to help space the floor and provide ample shooting prowess around the arc for both Westbrook and Harden to facilitate to.

Having won the AAC Player of the Year while at the University of Cincinnati in 2018, Clark hits the free-agent market for the first time since going undrafted in the 2018 NBA Draft. The possibility exists that he could reunite with the Rockets, but he is also free to ink a new deal elsewhere with the promise of more playing time.
