REPORT: Rockets waive former No. 1 overall pick Anthony Bennett

The Houston Rockets have officially waived former No.1 overall pick Anthony Bennett.

Bennett signed a training camp contract with the Rockets in hopes of revitalizing his career. However, the Canadian forward suffered from a sore left knee and eventually made the decision to undergo surgery — losing all his chance to make it to Houston’s 15-man roster.

The Cleveland Cavaliers took Bennett at No.1 overall in 2013 out of UNLV, though it became clear very soon that no other team was planning on even taking a swing on Bennett in the lottery — let alone with the tippy-top pick.

Over the course of his four-year NBA career, Bennett averaged 4.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 0.5 assists in only 12.6 minutes per game with the Cavs, Minnesota Timberwolves, Brooklyn Nets and Toronto Raptors.

Bennett only played one season with the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels, and while his numbers were good (16.1 points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.2 blocks per game), he did not receive any postseason honors. He was only named as a Wooden Award Finalist.

While the UNLV version of Bennett would certainly make for a tantalizing prospect in today’s NBA, he would never have been thought of as a top pick. Still, after being cut loose by the Rockets, perhaps the 26-year-old will get another chance in the 2019-20 season with a different team.
