REPORT: Rockets take advantage of transaction window, sign David Nwaba

Rockets, David Nwaba

The Houston Rockets are signing free agent shooting guard David Nwaba ahead of the NBA’s 2019-20 season resumption in Orlando, Florida, per Shams Charania of The Athletic.

The NBA set a “transaction window” between June 23 and June 30 for all 30 teams to sign free agents or waive players, of which the Rockets took advantage by adding the injured free agent Nwaba to the roster before the season restarts.

David Nwaba previously spent the 2019-20 season with the Brooklyn Nets, making 20 appearances with the Eastern Conference club before getting waived on Jan. 3. A former undrafted 6-foot-5 guard out of Cal Poly, Nwaba first broke through in the NBA after playing for Los Angeles Lakers’ G League affiliate South Bay Lakers, later getting the call-up to play in L.A. during the 2016-17 season.

The 27-year-old swingman had his most productive season in 2017-18 when he made 70 appearances and 21 starts for the Chicago Bulls, averaging 7.9 points and 4.7 rebounds a game.

He joined the Cleveland Cavaliers the following season before signing a two-year, non-guaranteed deal with Brooklyn in the 2019 offseason.

Nwaba has been known for his high energy and the defense he provides. The California native signed a two-year deal with Houston because he is currently sidelined with an Achilles injury, so he will not participate in the season restart with the Rockets in Orlando.

However, the two-year contract gives the Rockets flexibility to keep Nwaba around during the 2020-21 season, which may not get to start until December due to the suspended and restarted 2019-20 season along with postponed dates of the draft and free agency.
