The Houston Rockets are releasing DeMarcus Cousins, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium. This will give the veteran big man a chance to scour the open market for a new team.
It was reported over the weekend that Cousins was on his way out, even after Houston guaranteed his $2.3 million salary for the rest of the season. With the Rockets’ season going down the drain, Boogie will get an opportunity to potentially play for a contender.
The Los Angeles Lakers have been reported as a possible destination, and they just waived Quinn Cook. The Lakers are looking for roster help with Anthony Davis out through the All-Star break. DeMarcus Cousins joined Los Angeles before the 2019-20 season, but a torn ACL cost him the entire campaign.
Cousins missed Monday’s ugly loss to the Chicago Bulls with a foot injury. The 30-year-old was a good soldier in a weird spot with the Rockets, especially amid the James Harden trade drama and all the fallout that came with that.
While Cousins was appreciated for his professionalism in Houston, he struggled on the court after missing all of last season with that knee injury. In 25 games and 11 starts, he averaged 9.6 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists while shooting just 37.6% from the field and 33.6% on 3-pointers in 20.2 minutes per game. A string of major injuries has sapped him of some of the power and explosion that used to make him so dominant, and his defense can be exploited.
