Report: Rockets GM Daryl Morey showing ‘aggressive desire’ to improve roster, could move Chris Paul in right deal

Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey is reportedly hellbent in improving his roster, showing an “aggressive desire” to do so by being willing to involve players and potential draft picks, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Chris Paul, who is fresh off of signing a four-year, $160 million deal with the team last summer, could be among the players in this conversation — something that could lead to Morey blowing up the roster by taking off one of the pillars of this team.

Wojnarowski acknowledged it would be hard to fathom Morey being willing to trade the franchise talisman James Harden, but Paul could be among the pieces dealt in hopes to improve this team.

The Rockets have now been eliminated by the Golden State Warriors in two straight postseasons, including four of the last five, as their obsession with constructing their roster to target their weaknesses has been futile.

Morey is likely feeling the aftereffects of this fate, as owner Tilman Fertitta was visibly irate at the Rockets squandering a golden chance to strike and break through with the Warriors missing Kevin Durant in a vital Game 6 at home.

The longtime GM has yet to extend head coach Mike D’Antoni, but has fired two of his main assistants and a video coordinator, hinting to a sizable change within the coaching staff.

The Rockets have also looked at coach Tyronn Lue for a potential assistant role, though the latter has been intent in returning to the sidelines as an NBA coach.

“Houston, we have a problem” is very much a real conversation for today’s Rockets, who have yet to envision a clear pathway to get over this playoff hurdle, as D’Antoni’s iso-heavy formula and surrounding the backcourt of Paul and Harden with shooters has proven ineffective in the last two playoff runs, leaving Morey and company scrambling for answers.
