With only 11 more days until the Feb. 7 deadline, Houston Rockets forward Marquese Chriss has made it clear through his agent, Aaron Goodwin, that he wants a better opportunity with his current team or a trade, according to Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports.
Chriss was originally traded to the Rockets alongside Brandon Knight in exchange for Ryan Anderson and his hefty contract during the summer, but the third-year forward has struggled to get on the floor, even after the Rockets have been decimated by injuries throughout the season.
“Marquese didn’t ask to be traded to Houston,” Goodwin told Haynes. “The Rockets are a great organization and the kid has done everything they’ve asked of him to get on the floor. If it’s not going to happen there, we just want him to be treated fairly.”
Chriss has only played in 15 of the team’s 49 games this season, averaging only 6.7 minutes per game in his appearances.
Houston recently saw a need for an athletic big with the injury to Clint Capela, but the Rockets opted to sign Kenneth Faried after a buyout rather than plug Chriss in the lineup. The 21-year-old is long and athletic, just like Capela, and boasts the ability to shoot the ball from distance — yet according to head coach Mike D’Antoni, it isn’t his time just yet.
“He’s on a really good team that has two or three guys ahead of him. That’s about the only thing,” D’Antoni told Yahoo Sports earlier this month. “He’s a good kid and he works hard. It’s just not his time yet.”
Chriss got decent playing time with the Phoenix Suns during his first two seasons, but has been mainly warming the bench this season, something his agent hates to see.
“I would hate to see a career derailed because teams feel he cannot play at the level he did before the trade,” he said.
