REPORT: Pelicans won’t have interest in Carmelo Anthony should he become available

Carmelo Anthony, Pelicans

The New Orleans Pelicans won’t have any interest in Carmelo Anthony if/when he becomes available, according to Will Guillory of The Athletic.

The Houston Rockets are widely expected to part ways with Anthony soon.

After getting traded by the Oklahoma City Thunder to the Atlanta Hawks and then reaching a buyout agreement with Atlanta in the offseason, Carmelo Anthony signed a one-year deal worth the veteran’s minimum with Houston. The prevailing thought was playing with two elite playmakers in point guard Chris Paul and reigning MVP James Harden would help Anthony become an effective player again.

That hasn’t been the case at all, though, as Carmelo Anthony has been a negative to the team when he’s been on the floor. Houston has a net rating of minus-9.0 with Anthony on the court and minus-0.2 with him on the bench, per NBA.com.

Carmelo Anthony has appeared in 10 games this season for the Rockets. The 10-time All-Star and future Hall of Famer is averaging 13.4 points and 5.4 rebounds while shooting 40.5 percent from the field and 32.8 percent from beyond the arc. It’s not fair to blame all of the Rockets’ issues on Anthony, but it’s clear he’s just not a good fit for the team.

The Pelicans don’t really have a spot for Carmelo Anthony. They have enough small forward depth and don’t need a volume shooter like Melo to take shots away from superstar big man Anthony Davis.
