REPORT: Knicks exploring trading for Russell Westbrook if made available by Rockets

Russell Westbrook, Tom Thibodeau, Knicks, Rockets

Although the New York Knicks famously struck out on their top free-agent choices last offseason, it appears that will not stop them from gauging the market for star power once again.

With all the looming changes going on with the Houston Rockets, there is plenty of speculation regarding the future of their superstar backcourt with James Harden and Russell Westbrook. According to Ian Begley in SNY, Westbrook will reportedly be on the Knicks’ radar should he be made available for trade:

Something else to keep an eye on: some agents who represent top point guard free agents believe the Knicks would poke around on a potential Russell Westbrook trade if Houston makes him available. It’s worth noting that Westbrook, per sources, saw New York as a welcome landing spot last summer when Oklahoma City was talking to teams about potential trades.

The Knicks have reportedly been doing their due diligence on potentially making a splash this offseason whether it is through the 2020 NBA Draft or free agency. While it remains to be seen if they will stick with the No. 8 pick, they could also be waiting on the Rockets to make a move with Westbrook.

It is no secret that Houston fell well short of expectations after being dismantled by the Los Angeles Lakers in five games. Westbrook’s underwhelming performance during the postseason have now raised concern regarding the three years and $132.6 million left on his current contract.

With the Knicks in desperate need of a spark, it will be interesting to see if they are the ones to take Westbrook’s remaining deal off the Rockets’ hands.
