Report: James Harden’s claim about reporting to Rockets after missing Sunday’s individual workout

James Harden, Rockets

Question marks continue to linger regarding James Harden’s commitment to the Houston Rockets after a drama-filled day on Sunday.

Harden didn’t participate in Sunday’s group practice because of COVID-19 protocols, but the Rockets were expecting him to show up for an individual workout at night. The superstar didn’t show up for that either, per ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, but he apparently told management he plans on reporting “soon.”

The Rockets star was celebrating Lil Baby’s birthday over the past week, and video surfaced of Harden allegedly partying in Las Vegas over the weekend as part of the bash. Harden also posted a cryptic emoji to his Instagram story in the midst of the drama on Sunday.

This left new Rockets head coach Stephen Silas in a tough spot answering questions about Harden. John Wall was also asked about Harden’s commitment to the franchise, and the new Rockets point guard claimed he recently had a “great talk” with The Beard about it and that there’s nothing to worry about.

This all seems rather dubious given Harden’s apparent desire to get traded to the Brooklyn Nets, and it’s hard to see how it ends well.

The Rockets have had to deal with a lot over the past few months after a season in which they were bounced out of the playoffs by the Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference Semifinals in five games. Mike D’Antoni and Daryl Morey soon left, and then Russell Westbrook requested a trade. At first it seemed as if Harden was committed to Houston, but then his trade desires leaked as well.

There were reports out there suggesting a deal with the Nets was basically done, but nothing has come to fruition. Now, after a swap of Westbrook and Wall, the Rockets are waiting for their star player to actually show up to camp. Houston’s first preseason game is on Friday against the Chicago Bulls.

Stay tuned.
