A year after he was selected by the Houston Rockets in the second round of the 2017 NBA Draft, big man Isaiah Hartenstein has finally inked a contract with the Rockets. The contract is reportedly a three-year deal, according to Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle, who tweeted that detail just prior to Rockets general manager Daryl Morey uploading an Instagram post that shows Hartenstein putting pen on paper.
Although Hartenstein did not see action for the Rockets last season, he spent most of his time improving his game in the G League, playing for Houston’s G League affiliate ball club, Rio Grande Vipers. In 38 games for the Vipers last season, Isaiah Hartenstein averaged 9.5 points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 1.1 blocks. He also shot a high 57.1 percent from the field.
A lefty center, Hartenstein can draw comparisons with former Rockets center and fellow southpaw Donatas Motiejūnas.
Hartenstein, who is from Germany and played professionally in Europe before coming over to the United States, is going to serve as depth piece for Houston. The 20-year-old Hartenstein is a seven-footer who is light on his feet and moves well without a ball. He’s yet to have a polished game at the post, but he’s dependable on pick-and-roll plays and often finds scoring opportunities off of offensive rebounds.
