REPORT: Houston Rockets pick up option on Mike D’Antoni’s 4th year

Mike D'Antoni

Mike D’Antoni is one of the best coaches in the NBA and the Rockets don’t want to see him coaching anywhere other than Houston in the foreseeable future. According to Mark Berman of Fox 26 KRIV, the Rockets are picking up their team option on D’Antoni for the 2019-20 season.

D’Antoni originally signed a three-year deal with a team option for a fourth season, and unsurprisingly, the Rockets are wasting no time in picking up that option. The 2016-17 NBA Coach of the Year has taken this Rockets team to new heights. After posting a 55-win season in his first year in Houston, D’Antoni led the Rockets to a franchise-best 65-win season and the first overall seed in the Western Conference in 2017-18.

Despite falling to the eventual champion Golden State Warriors in seven games in the Western Conference Finals, Houston feels they have the right guy at the helm to get them over the hump.

D’Antoni has been instrumental in allowing James Harden to flourish. D’Antoni’s style of play has made Harden extremely comfortable and his system was definitely a reason why Harden was able to bring home the league’s MVP trophy this year.

This is anything but surprising from Houston. D’Antoni turned around a team that was seen as one of the more dysfunctional locker rooms in the league. In order to reach their overall goal of winning an NBA title, Houston still has the monumental hurdle that is the Golden State Warriors. But if anyone can get it done for the Rockets, it’s D’Antoni.
