Report: GM Daryl Morey gets 5-year extension from Rockets
The Houston Rockets have given general manager Daryl Morey a five-year extension, according to Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle:
“I’m super happy,” said Morey. “I’d love to be with the Rockets for life. This obviously solidifies us for a little while. I’m just really thankful to Tilman Fertitta for having the faith in our team. And really, it is about us having a team of people that makes this all work; Coach (Mike) D’Antoni, (vice president) Keith Jones, (vice president) Gersson Rosas, (trainer) Jason Biles, (assistant general manager) Monte McNair, (assistant general manager) Eli Witus, (assistant general manager, Vipers GM) Jimmy Paulis.
“We have too many people to mention, but I’m only as good as the people behind me.”
The Rockets also picked up their option on the final season of head coach Mike D’Antoni’s contract, which will keep him with Houston until the 2019-20 season, but Morey said he would like to work on an extension for the coach in the offseason:
“He’s such a critical factor,” said Morey. “Speaking for myself only, I would love for him to be here for as long as he wants to be here. He’s so critical to everything we’re doing here. Hopefully, that’s something we can work out at the right time. I think the right thing for everyone is those things are done in the offseason.”
Morey’s extension comes on the heels of falling a game shy of the NBA Finals last year and managing to bring a struggling hollowed-out roster from the 14th spot in the West to the current third seed, now boasting a game of separation with the fourth-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder.
The savvy GM not only found a way to navigate the Carmelo Anthony signing fiasco cleanly, but also replaced the likes of Trevor Ariza, a vital cog on both sides of the ball, all while bringing Houston’s expected $14.8 million luxury tax to below the threshold, saving the organization plenty of unwanted bills.
To add to his unrelenting work, Morey managed to scoop up some of the best free agents on the buyout market, including the likes of Austin Rivers and Kenneth Faried. He also acquired Iman Shumpert at the trade deadline.
