Gerald Green was an uplifting story for the Houston Rockets this season. After bouncing around the league in recent years, Green’s future looked bleak. But the Rockets needed a wing midseason and Green was available.
Now, Green and the Rockets are planning to meet on July 1 in Los Angeles according to Chris Haynes of ESPN. Haynes also states that Green has a number of potential teams interested. Green is an athletic wing that knocks down open jumpers at a decent clip.
In 41 games with Houston last season, Green shot the ball well from deep at a 37 percent clip. He filled in admirably in the brief absences of James Harden and Chris Paul, and was the prototypical role player that Harden and Paul needed coming off the bench. He can keep defenses honest by spacing the floor and he can get out in transition as well.
The 32-year-old is a Houston native, but it’s unclear if his hometown will play any role in his decision during free agency. His surprising play in Houston may be enough for a team to offer a contract with multiple years. It’s unclear how much he can get on the open market, but he is clearly keeping his options open. One thing that is known is that Green loves his hometown, and was even helping Hurricane Harvey victims by taking out his boat and helping stranded survivors.
The 2017-18 season was one of the most successful of Green’s career. He may have found the perfect fit in Houston or he may finally be maturing into his role. Either way, the 6-foot-7 swingman has found new life in the NBA. After playing on four different teams in four seasons, Green may decide to re-sign with Houston where things are familiar.
