Report: Full Lakers roster an obstacle to acquiring Carmelo Anthony

Carmelo Anthony, Lakers

For years, there has been an ongoing belief that LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony will join forces. It hasn’t happened yet, but there is still a chance that it could come to fruition.

According to reports, there are a few teams interested in Anthony’s services, including the Los Angeles Lakers. However, there is a rather large obstacle in that path, as the Lakers’ roster is currently filled.

If the Lakers are indeed interested in bringing Melo in, they would need to waive another player or make a trade. At this point, it’s not clear if the team is willing to take that step, and some are questioning his conditioning.

Sam Amick detailed the situation in a recent article for The Athletic:

The Lakers, who have a full roster and would have to waive someone to sign him if he was waived, continue to be tied to Anthony more than any other team. But according to a Lakers source, the fact that the roster is full is not a small obstacle. Not only is it unclear how they would clear the roster spot to add Anthony, or if there’s a possible trade to be made there with the Rockets, but a source close to James said Anthony’s conditioning and the overall state of his game are considered key factors here in terms of convincing the Lakers to add the player who had the worst season of his career with the Thunder and wasn’t any better with the Rockets.

Anthony made just 10 appearances with the Rockets this season, averaging career lows in nearly every statistical category (13.4 points on 40.5 percent shooting and 5.4 rebounds).

Whether or not Anthony will find a new team remains to be seen. His resume — complete with 10 All-Star selections and six All-NBA nods — is impressive, but will someone take a shot on him at this stage of his career?
