REPORT: Daryl Morey’s contract extension with Rockets pays him in the $8 million range annually

According to Marc Stein of the New York Times, Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey makes around $8 million per season after signing a five-year contract extension in March.

Morey has been with the Rockets since 2007. He was the Executive of the Year in 2017-18 when Houston had the best record in the NBA and took the Golden State Warriors to Game 7 of the 2018 Western Conference Finals.

Industry estimates suggest Morey’s recent contract extension from the Rockets pays him in the $8 million range annually. [Magic] Johnson was earning an estimated $10 million as the Lakers’ team president.

Trading for James Harden in 2012 was the biggest move Daryl Morey has made with the Rockets. The Dwight Howard experiment didn’t work out that well, although Houston did advance to the 2015 Western Conference Finals.

Some other good moves Morey has made was drafting center Clint Capela, hiring Mike D’Antoni as coach and performing a sign-and-trade with the Los Angeles Clippers to get Chris Paul.

Houston is the fourth seed in the Western Conference standings. At one point in the season, the team was in the 14th spot. Morey signed guard Austin Rivers and big man Kenneth Faried in the middle of the season, two acquisitions which helped the Rockets make the postseason.
