Report: Clippers won’t bid for Carmelo Anthony if he’s cut by Rockets

Carmelo Anthony, Rockets

The Houston Rockets are reportedly cutting ties with forward Carmelo Anthony after a 10-game experiment that misfired in a major way. In case the perennial scorer finds himself on the waiver wire soon, the LA Clippers have added themselves to the list of those teams that won’t come clamoring for his services.

The Clippers are the last of several teams to show zero interest in the maligned wing, including the Los Angeles LakersNew Orleans Pelicans and Philadelphia 76ers, according to Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times.

“Assuming Anthony is released and no team claims him, his next landing spot is unclear,” wrote Woike. “It won’t be with the Clippers, a league executive unauthorized to speak publicly about it and requested anonymity told the Los Angeles Times. Across town, it’s a little murkier, but it seems unlikely. If the Lakers do decide to add Anthony, it means they’re desperate enough to try to resuscitate a career that some scouts and executives think is on the doorstep of being done.”

Carmelo Anthony has now had a couple of horrid experiences joining teams expecting to contend for a championship, as his one-year run with the Oklahoma City Thunder resulted in his only season averaging less than 20 points per game, after doing so for his first 14 seasons in the league.

A brief dance with the Rockets only saw those averages go down even more, failing to fit with the outside-in philosophy of Mike D’Antoni and getting the brunt of the criticism for the team’s defensive woes after losing Trevor Ariza and Luc Mbah a Moute in free agency.

The Clippers are likely awaiting a big swing in free agency, but they’ve held their own quite well recently with their current roster, now sporting wins over the Milwaukee Bucks and Golden State Warriors. LA is currently in fourth place in the West with an 8-5 record to start the young season.
