Report: Chris Paul targeting to return this week

Chris Paul Rockets

It wasn’t long ago that coach Mike D’Antoni was beginning to get excited about the return of his prized point guard and newest free agent addition Chris Paul.

Paul has only played one game to date for the Rockets and has been battling a knee injury since that time. The Rockets, however, are still very adaptable and are currently on a six-game winning streak.

Not only are they on a roll wins-wise, but they stand at No. 1 in the Western Conference with an 11-3 record just a half game above the Golden State Warriors.

Ahead of the Rockets’ Thursday matchup against the Phoenix Suns, Paul stepped up the intensity of his workouts in preparation for coming back on the court to help the team continue the momentum.

The Rockets completed a back-to-back Sunday night win against the Indiana Pacers 118-95 and have no game scheduled Monday. Tuesday is scheduled for Paul to go through a series of more intense workouts before practicing with the team on Wednesday.

Coach Mike D’Antoni spoke with the Houston Chronicle saying his final expectation is to have his point guard back on the floor Thursday.

“We don’t want to push it. If not Thursday, then we’ll see about Saturday (in Memphis). He worked out hard (Sunday.) We’ll see how he feels Tuesday and Wednesday. That (having Paul play on Thursday) is what we’re shooting for.”

Finally, the Rockets can only get better with Paul on the floor who plays as intensely as the team’s best player James Harden, which will make for a scary backcourt this year.
