Report: Celtics engaging with Rockets in Clint Capela trade talks

Rockets, Clint Capela, Celtics

The Boston Celtics have had trade talks with the Houston Rockets centered around big man Clint Capela, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

The Rockets would prefer to trade Capela to an Eastern Conference team. They’re trying to acquire first-round picks for a deal to get a wing and a center to replace Capela:

The Celtics do have a handful of 2020 first-round picks at their disposal to dangle in a trade offer.

Capela has appeared in 39 games for the Rockets this season. He’s averaging 13.9 points, 13.8 rebounds and 1.2 assists while shooting 62.9 percent from the field and 52.9 percent from the free-throw line.

Right now, Capela is dealing with a nagging heel injury which will likely keep him out for a few games.

The Celtics are 33-15 on the season. They are in third place in the Eastern Conference and could be one player away from becoming the favorites to win the East, although the Milwaukee Bucks still have the best record in the NBA and in the reigning MVP in Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Capela is making $14,896,552 this season. He’s owed $16,000,000 next season, $17,103,448 in 2021-22 and $18,206,897 in 2022-23. Capela does most of his damage on alley-oops thanks to James Harden and Russell Westbrook. One can surmise that he would flourish with the Celtics too playing alongside Kemba Walker, who is one of the best drivers and passers in the NBA.

The NBA trade deadline is on Thursday. It will be interesting to see where Capela ends up landing.
