Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry says James Harden ‘is the best offensive player out there’

Ahead of the New Orleans Pelicans’ matchup against the Houston Rockets, head coach Alvin Gentry has high praise for the reigning league MVP, calling him the best offensive player in the league in an interview with Rockets reporter Jonathan Feigen.

“I think he’s the best offensive player out there and I can’t think of one, really, over the course of their career that’s been better than he’s been from the standpoint of being able to put up the kind of numbers he’s done and do it efficiently.”

This statement is coming off the heels of Harden’s 61-point performance against the San Antonio Spurs on Friday. The All-Star guard was unstoppable against the Spurs, as he shot 55 percent from the field for the game. San Antonio, as impressive as they’ve been over the past two weeks, had no answer for Harden. They lost the game 111-105.

Harden will once again look to score at will against the Pels, but only if he can shake off the defense of Jrue Holiday.

In their three previous meetings this season, Holiday was able to make things difficult for Harden. The Beard shot an abysmal 30.8 percent while being guarded by Holiday, and while he still got his usual numbers, it was clear that he hasn’t been able to figure out a way to shrug off the Pelicans guard’s defense.

Look for both guards to go at it again in their final meeting of the season.
