Nene on track to return to Rockets soon

Nene, Rockets

With the Houston Rockets finding themselves in a heap of problems early this season, it doesn’t hurt to welcome a piece of good news. Nene, who has been dealing with a calf injury, could return to Houston soon.

In his column about the Rockets’ failing relationship with Carmelo Anthony, Kelly Iko of The Athletic mentioned Nene and how the team misses his “calming presence” in the locker room. The article also cited that while the 36-year-old Brazilian didn’t make the trip to Denver, he is “on track with his recovery plan and hopes to rejoin the team soon.”

“Every team goes through negative stuff,” Nene told The Athletic on their bumpy start. “But it’s about how you respond, and we’ll be all right.”

The 17-year NBA veteran hasn’t played a game since sustaining an injury during the preseason. The Rockets would love to have him back since Clint Capela has been the only effective big man for the team so far.

Rookie center Isaiah Hartenstein hasn’t been much of a help while recent acquisition Marquese Chriss has not cracked a spot in the rotation yet.

With a big man in Nene, the Rockets don’t necessarily go slow. Versatility and mobility are his greatest assets, and his effectiveness in pick-and-roll situations is an excellent option for playmakers Chris Paul and James Harden.

Last season, Nene posted averages of 6.5 points and 3.4 rebounds, while shooting 57% from the field.
