NBA news: Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant are early odds-on favorite to win MVP next season
Former teammates Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant are tied as the early favorites to win the Most Valuable Player award next season, according to SportsInsights.
Despite having gone separate ways, each of them ended up as MVPs of their own this past season, as the Oklahoma City Thunder point guard managed to win his first award after breaking a couple of 55-year-old records held by Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson. Durant put up a career-best playoff performance in the NBA Finals, granting him the honor of Finals MVP as the Golden State Warriors took home a second championship in three seasons after a 16-1 playoff run.
The former one-two punch came in at +350 odds, a vast different from Kawhi Leonard, who was third on the list at +550, followed up by MVP-runner up James Harden at +700.
Cleveland Cavaliers star forward LeBron James is tied with Milwaukee Bucks phenom Giannis Antetokounmpo at +750 odds, followed by Stephen Curry at +1100, Anthony Davis at +1600 and Isaiah Thomas and Paul George rounding out the top-10 list at +2000.
Other notables include dime wizard John Wall and crafty big man Karl-Anthony Towns at +3000, newly-re-located Chris Paul at +3300, 76ers prodigy Joel Embiid at +5000 and New York Knicks estranged star Carmelo Anthony at +6000.
Westbrook was a +300 odds favorite last season, second only to two-time MVP Curry who topped the list at +250.
