An anonymous NBA GM suggests that Houston Rockets guard Chris Paul could be a good addition to any team, but his declining ability coupled with his large contract makes it difficult to make a trade.
In report by Sean Deveney of Sporting News, the unnamed general manager said that having Paul around could be good for the young point guards, especially with this experience and the way he sees the court. However, Paul has admittedly ‘lost a step’ while being in a humongous contract.
“As a player, of course you would take him on. He is experienced. He is a smart guy. He can be good for young point guards to be around the way he sees the floor. But he lost a step. At the same time, he is gaining a big, big contract.”
Earlier this week, there were reports about the Rockets making everyone available except for superstar guard James Harden. Paul and Clint Capela have been the subject of trade speculations given that they are the second and third-best players after Harden.
Paul averaged 15.6 points, 8.2 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game in the 2018-19 season. However, sharing the ball with Harden clearly had an impact on his production. If he can be the primary ball handler on another team, that might help him raise his statistical output.
However, playing for more than a decade in the NBA has clearly taken its toll on CP3’s body. He’s already injury prone, and his inability to stay healthy could lessen his value on the market.
The summer is just around the corner. It will be interesting to see how this Rockets situation unfolds. Whether or not Paul is traded before next season, the team is in a win-now mentality and is hellbent on improving the roster with the hopes of finally winning a championship.
