Mike D’Antoni’s agent pushes back on report of nearing extension with Houston
Houston Rockets head coach Mike D’Antoni’s agent, Warren LeGarie, denies a report that D’Antoni and the Rockets are nearing an agreement on a contract extension.
LeGarie says while Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta and general manager Daryl Morey have met with D’Antoni in West Virginia, the two sides aren’t close to coming to terms on an extension.
Mike D’Antoni’s agent, Warren LeGarie, acknowledges Tilman Fertitta and Daryl Morey have met with Mike in West Virginia, but says a report that the two sides are nearing an agreement on an extension is not accurate: “It’s not exactly representing the situation. D’Antoni has one year left on his deal with the Rockets. It’s important to note when Fertitta bought the team from Leslie Alexander, D’Antoni was already the head coach. That doesn’t mean the two men don’t have a good relationship, it’s just that Fertitta might want to see D’Antoni lead Houston on a title run first before giving him an extension.
The Rockets lost to the Golden State Warriors in the second round of the 2019 playoffs. It was the second straight playoffs Houston got eliminated by the Warriors. Golden State defeated the Rockets in Game 6 without the services of Kevin Durant. Fertitta was very upset about the loss when he spoke to local reporters after Game 6.
D’Antoni is 173-73 in the regular season and 23-16 in the postseason with the Rockets. He won Coach of the Year in 2017 and guided Houston to the best record in the NBA in 2017-18.
