Mike D’Antoni would be ‘fine’ with Carmelo Anthony joining, if he comes off the bench

Carmelo Anthony, Mike D'Antoni

The Houston Rockets are the frontrunners for Carmelo Anthony, as he and the Oklahoma City Thunder are working on parting ways in the near future.

The Rockets chased after Anthony last offseason, as the New York Knicks were looking to unload his contract off the books, being successful this time around would spell a reunion between Anthony and head coach Mike D’Antoni, who coached Anthony during his stint in The Big Apple.

While the two clashed during their time in New York, the 67-year-old wouldn’t oppose Melo joining the All-Star backcourt of Chris Paul and James Harden, so long as he comes off the bench, according to Tim Bontemps of The Washington Post.

“Ironically, that’s exactly what Rockets Coach Mike D’Antoni wanted him to do when the two clashed while together with the New York Knicks. D’Antoni’s presence was expected to be a roadblock to Anthony’s arrival, but multiple sources said D’Antoni would be fine with Anthony coming to Houston. The phrase “time heals all wounds” comes to mind.”

The formula of adding a third scorer to a team with two All-Stars has already proven to fail during his one-year stint with the Thunder. The Rockets would be asking the same position the Thunder offered in order for Anthony to continue his stint with the team, only that he would be paid much less to do so.

It’s unclear if the interest is mutual, or if the role has been made clear to Anthony, but a potential re-partnership between player and coach would hinge on his acceptance of the role.
