Mike D’Antoni stresses importance of Rockets drowning out the ‘white noise’

The Houston Rockets seem to be settling into the season after a rocky start, and head coach Mike D’Antoni believes it’s important that his team drowns out the white noise coming from the outside. The breakup with Carmelo Anthony is creating headlines, and the shaky start from the team, in general, is leading to intense scrutiny.

“You know I think I said it yesterday, but the thing about coaching or playing — these guys — thankfully we have veterans, but you have to drown out the white noise. It’s just noise. People that unless you’re on the inside you just don’t know. It’s not that I blame them or anything, you just don’t know. You can’t know.

“You just point to things that are obvious. It’s not the same personnel, you can’t do this, you can’t do that. Yeah, you can and we’ve got guys that can do it and they’re doing it. I was hoping again that leads to sleepless nights. You think they can, but until they prove it then you worry about it, but they’re proving it now. Now it’s just can they do it every night for the next 68 games? It’s gonna be a good question and I think they will, but again, we’ve gotta prove it.”

The Rockets are a different team than they were last year, but the core of the team remains the same. Once Chris Paul, James Harden, and Clint Capela settle into a groove, the rest of the team will follow.

There’s no reason to panic in Houston. As D’Antoni said, all the Rockets have to do is “drown out the white noise.”
