When Carmelo Anthony signed with the Houston Rockets in the offseason, many were wondering how the dynamic would work between Anthony and head coach Mike D’Antoni. Anthony was coached by D’Antoni with the New York Knicks. The two had a murky relationship back then, and D’Antoni resigned from his post during the 2011-12 season because he was unable to get Anthony to buy into his style.
However, D’Antoni and Anthony have since patched things up, and the Rockets coach believes Anthony is a good addition to the team. In Sunday’s exhibition game against the San Antonio Spurs, Anthony came off the bench for the first time with Houston, and he finished with 12 points while shooting 5-of-11 from the floor and 2-of-6 from the 3-point line.
“He’s going to be perfect,” D’Antoni said, via Jonathan Feigen of The Houston Chronicle. “James [Harden] and Chris [Paul] don’t have to carry the load. He can make plays. His game, too, toward the end of games, midrange, post-ups are good. We don’t want to do it most of the game because 3s are better throughout the game, but when it comes down to one point, two points, three points, whatever, it gives us another big option.”
It appears Anthony is going to come off the bench with the Rockets, at least to start off the season. But like D’Antoni says, Anthony will most likely be finishing games alongside Paul, Harden, Clint Capela and James Ennis due to his ability to hit tough shots in clutch situations.
