Mike D’Antoni reacts to LeBron James comparing Rockets to Rams’ ‘Greatest Show on Turf’

Rockets, Lakers, Rams, Greatest Show on Turf

Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James said the Houston Rockets are like the St. Louis Rams’ legendary “Greatest Show on Turf” offense after a 112-97 Game 1 loss. Rockets head coach Mike D’Antoni responded to James’ interesting comparison and appreciated the compliment.

Likewise, D’Antoni believes the Rockets will be able to replicate their impressive showing that led to their 112-97 win in Game 1. In fact, the 69-year-old mentor even believes they can ramp it up a notch higher, especially on the offensive end.

Via Sam Amick of The Athletic:

“Oh we can replicate what we did (in Game 1),” D’Antoni said. “I don’t doubt that. I don’t know if they’ll let us replicate it, but (James’ comment) is a nice compliment. (But) we didn’t play very fast last night, to be honest with you. Defensively, we did. We were flying around. But offensively, we can up our speed a lot more. And we’ll need to do that. You know, again, take the compliment. It’s great. But he’ll be coming at us like a freight train tomorrow and we’ve got to be ready to roll.”

Houston stunned Los Angeles in the series opener despite many analysts and experts believing the Lakers would dominate the Rockets due to their size. But as much as the Lakers have the size advantage, Houston is able to counter with speed, quickness, and ability to get in transition.

The Rockets played a scrappy brand of defense that disrupted the Lakers’ offensive flow all night long, and they had plenty of success against a strong L.A. defense. Houston shot 48.1% from the field in Game 1 and held the Lakers to 42.2% shooting.

It’s only going to get tougher for the Rockets as they move forward and try to win this series. They’ll need to stay locked in.
