The Houston Rockets have added their most significant asset by officially signing Carmelo Anthony to a one-year, $2.4 million deal for the veteran’s minimum. This will spell a reunion with former head coach Mike D’Antoni, who coached him during their time with the New York Knicks.
The 67-year-old infamously quit after being faced with an ultimatum — either he or Anthony would remain, as the two couldn’t potentially coexist. But time seems to have healed their relationship, as D’Antoni seems eager to see him in uniform, according to Jonathan Feigen of The Houston Chronicle.
“His skill set is enormous. He can do a lot of things. His talent and what we have already will make us more formidable. We need to put him in positions where he flourishes. I’m looking forward to that.”
While there are many questioning just how much he has left in the tank, D’Antoni wouldn’t relent, saying Anthony could have a role similar to the one he had as the captain on Team USA.
“He wants to win and be a part of what we have. There’s a lot of places he can fit. I understand the naysayers. Some are what they said about Chris coming to us. It’s our job to prove them wrong… to take his talents and fit them in, a little like USA Basketball.”
D’Antoni and Anthony also crossed paths in the international level, as the long-tenured coach was an assistant on Mike Krzyzewski’s bench when Melo made his last hurrah with the red, white, and blue during the Rio 2016 Olympics.
