Mike D’Antoni on his Rockets – ‘The worst we’re going to be is great’
Mike D’Antoni and the Houston Rockets are bringing back their “big three” from last season in James Harden, Chris Paul, and Clint Capela. Other than those three, the roster saw some turnover this summer.
But despite the changes, D’Antoni thinks his squad is poised for success. According to Mark Berman of Fox 26, D’Antoni said:
“I think the worst we’re going to be is great.”
The Rockets were undoubtedly great last season. They came within a game of dethroning the Golden State Warriors. In fact, had Chris Paul remained healthy in the Western Conference Finals, Houston probably would have knocked off the defending champs.
The biggest changes from last season to next season comes with the headline-grabbing addition of Carmelo Anthony, but the losses of Luc Mbah a Moute and Trevor Ariza loom large. While Anthony can replace their offensive production, he’s a gigantic dropoff on the defensive end from either player.
D’Antoni is right. The Rockets will be great this year. When you’ve got the trio of James Harden, Clint Capela, and Eric Gordon running teams into the ground with the “Spain pick and roll” among other D’Antoni sets, you’re going to win a lot of games. But are they good enough to knock off the juggernaut Warriors?
No one doubts the Rockets chances at becoming a top team in the league next year. They’ll likely wind up as a top seed in the Western Conference, but how far can they go in the playoffs?
Great may be good enough to win a championship some years. But the Warriors are better than great. They are an all-time team.
