Mike D’Antoni not worried about his turbulent past with Carmelo Anthony

Mike D'Antoni

The Houston Rockets are becoming the most likely suitor for Oklahoma City exile, Carmelo Anthony. The Rockets are in need of a forward that can stretch the floor after Trevor Ariza and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute fled Houston in free agency.

One of the only possible drawbacks to Melo landing in Houston is the fact that he and head coach Mike D’Antoni have a tumultuous history together. D’Antoni coached Anthony briefly while they were both in New York.

But According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, D’Antoni is looking forward to the possibility of coaching Anthony again and he’s ready to move past their history.

“The Rockets meeting included coach Mike D’Antoni, who had a turbulent relationship with Anthony as New York Knicks coach. D’Antoni made it clear to Anthony that he thinks the circumstances together would be far different in Houston, and welcomed the idea of coaching Anthony again, league sources said.”

This is no huge surprise. Both Carmelo Anthony and Mike D’Antoni have grown over the years and their time together in New York was years ago. Houston is a completely different situation for both.

Not to mention, Anthony and D’Antoni have reunited previously as a part of Team USA. Of course, a run together at the Olympics is much different than an 82-game season, but it seems like both parties are willing to let bygones be bygones.

But despite the indication that Anthony and D’Antoni’s past is exactly that—the past—if there is any turmoil in Houston, this will become a talking point among the media.
