Mike D’Antoni not ‘insulted’ by Rockets’ offer, says agent

Mike D'Antoni, Rockets

Despite failing to reach a contract extension with the Houston Rockets, head coach Mike D’Antoni is not in any way ‘insulted’ by what the team offered him.

The Rockets reportedly offered D’Antoni a one-year extension with the base salary reportedly only at $2.5 million, which is only half of the $5 million that he’s asking. The deal is incentive-based, which means the 68-year-old coach must fulfill certain conditions to get the bonuses in his contract.

While the offer seems to be disrespectful to a coach with D’Antoni’s stature, his agent Warren LeGarie said that the veteran tactician did not find the offer insulting.

“We’re not here to criticize the offer,” LeGarie told Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle. “We’re here to choose whether or not to accept it. We chose based on the current market for coaches of his stature as well as what he has done for the Rockets, the offer did not make sense for him, though I’m sure it makes sense for the Rockets. We don’t consider the offer insulting. It’s still real money. But it is our right not to take it.”

The Rockets have failed to beat the Golden State Warriors in the playoffs in four of the last five years, and it’s the main reason behind the management’s frustrations.

It is unclear if they will be able to strike a deal with D’Antoni, who is entering the final year of his contract. Nonetheless, it is pretty clear that team owner Tilman Fertitta is tired of losing, and he wants to make changes that will hopefully lead to a championship.
