Mike D’Antoni is confident GM Daryl Morey will retool Houston for next season
Houston Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni is patiently awaiting a contract extension, yet he’s fully confident newly-extended general manager Daryl Morey will upgrade this roster than once again fell shy of expectations.
The Rockets have lost two years in a row to the Golden State Warriors, this time with no potential excuse for injury, as it was Houston who had the golden chance to take matters into a Game 7 by winning on their own home court and facing the defending champions without their leading scorer in Kevin Durant.
Houston has now been eliminated by the Warriors in four out of the past five seasons, but that doesn’t keep D’Antoni from having faith in Morey’s offseason magic.
“You know you just never know with Daryl – which is a good thing. I know one thing for sure, and can be very confident, that he is going to put the best team on the floor that is possible,” D’Antoni told Sam Amick of The Athletic. “And I just let him do his thing, and you’ll have to talk to him, and then whatever comes out of it, I know for sure that that’s the best it can be – whatever it is. If it’s the same core, great. Like I said, I’m still confident that we can get to the ultimate goal, and we’ll add some little pieces here and there and go back at them again.”
The Rockets were criticized for letting go of Trevor Ariza, even after he missed all 12 of his attempts in a crucial Game 7 against the Warriors in 2018, yet Morey wheeled and dealt to acquire guys like Iman Shumpert, Kenneth Faried and Austin Rivers — players that proved vital in their pursuit of a playoff spot.
